Orthodontics

is a specialty of dentistry that is concerned with:

• The treatment of tooth irregularity = malocclusions
• Modification of disproportionate jaw relationships
• Modification of jawbones and facial growth
• Tight cooperation with another dentist subspecialization (children's dentistry, prosthesis, implantology, surgery, periodontics)

The main goal of the orthodontic treatment is:

• Reach the correct position of all teeth in dental arch
• Right jaw relationship between maxilla and mandible (serious irregularity has to be solved in cooperation with maxillofacial surgeons)
• Function improvement and extension of teeth lifetime
• Esthetic improvement
• Preventive observation of the growth and development of the denture with children
• Preparation of the denture for the possible future periodontic treatment

Orthodontic treatment can correct the changes in teeth position in case of gingivae disease. It also focuses on the correction of dental displacement before induction of implants (mainly in situation of excess or lack of space in implantation position).

Age for the start of the therapy

Orthodontic treatment can be started not only with children and teenage but also with adult patient of every age.

For orthodontic therapy is used:

1. Removable multibracket therapy – It is apparatus which could be removed from mouth by patient himself. It is indicated mainly for children with less serious defects or for pretreatment before the implantation of fixed multibracket. It is also used for maintenance of effect after therapy by fixed multibracket.
2. Fixed multibracket therapy – Steel ringlets are firmly attached on teeth. A wire which is formed in the shape of ideal dental arch is inserted into them. Wires are changed during the therapy from the thinnest to the thickest and move teeth to the required position. Fixed multibracket therapy is used for most of the orthodontic problems because only the constant pressure is able to carry out planed teeth movements.
